How to Apply
Public health degree programs prepare students for a variety of careers as academics, researchers, administrators, policy analysts, regulators, educators, program planners, evaluators, epidemiologists, biostatisticians, environmental health specialists, and biotechnical specialists in government and non-government health agencies and organizations, as well as educational settings.
For graduate students, we offer three academic degrees, two professional degrees in eight concentrations and three programmatic configurations, five concurrent degrees with other campus departments, and an Online MPH degree program. For undergraduate students, we offer an undergraduate degree in public health. See specific application instructions below.

Application Fee Waivers
There is a specific set of instructions on how to apply depending on which type of applicant you are. You will find detailed admissions instructions for each below.
All applicants to our on-campus graduate degree programs must first choose the degree program and area of concentration to which they will apply; please research these in detail before beginning the application process. Applicants may only apply to one program and should tailor their applications to the program of choice (please note: some programs will have additional requirements so please be sure to go through the “qualifications” section in the program-specific pages).
For all on-campus degree programs:
You are required to submit both the full SOPHAS application and the full Berkeley Graduate Admissions application prior to the December 1 deadline. We require the SOPHAS application to be submitted by the deadline and paid in full (or a waiver in process) in order for your application to be considered for review.
- SOPHAS Application Fee: $135 for the initial application
- UC Berkeley Graduate Admissions application fee: $105 domestic and $125 international
Instructions for the SOPHAS application:
a. Select only one-degree program and area of concentration; you will only be able to apply to one.
b. Be sure to fill out the entire application and be as thorough as possible. Make sure you arrange to have all general School of Public Health admissions requirements (e.g. test scores, letters of recommendations, transcripts, etc.) submitted along with any additional qualifications requested by the program you are applying to.
c. Due to the processing time at SOPHAS we strongly recommend submitting your application to SOPHAS by early November. Late applications will not be considered under any circumstances. We recommend starting early and submitting by early November to compensate for the processing time at SOPHAS and avoid any potential technical difficulties that may arise. But with this in mind, please note that there are no penalties for submitting your application to SOPHAS on December 1.
Due to the volume of applications we receive we cannot confirm receipt of individual applications or application materials. SOPHAS has a status page that you can access by logging back into your application. SOPHAS will use this as a mechanism to communicate to you that there may be something amiss with your application. The completeness and timeliness of your application is your responsibility so check back often and be sure to leave yourself enough time turn in the application by the deadline.
