Standardized Tests
Graduate Record Examination (GRE):
All applicants, except those with a doctoral degree (see below), must submit GRE scores.
- Valid scores are those from July 1, 2007 until present.
- GRE CODES
- 4227: If you are applying through SOPHAS use this code
- 4883: If you are applying to the On-campus/Online MPH or if you have ever been registered as a graduate student at UC Berkeley, you do not apply through SOPHAS and thus must use this different code
- Please note for those applying through SOPHAS , the code 4227 is correct but it will never show as received on the UC Berkeley specific application. As long as they show received on your SOPHAS application you are fine.
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL):
All applicants from countries in which the official language is not English are required to submit official evidence of English language proficiency. However, if you have completed at least one year of full-time (12 units) academic course work with grades of B or better in residence at a U.S. university, you do not need to take the TOEFL. Instead, you must submit an official transcript from the U.S. university. For more information on the official Graduate Division policy please click here.
- Valid scores are those from June 1, 2010 until present.
- TOEFL Codes: Please note that you must report to both UC Berkeley and SOPHAS. Reporting to only one place is insufficient. If you have already taken the TOEFL and reported only 4833 you will need to contact ETS and have them sent to 5688 as well.

Other Important Information about Standardized Tests:
- Applicants currently holding a recognized doctoral degree (e.g. M.D., Ph.D., J.D., and D.D.S) do not need to submit GRE scores.
- Please note that if your doctoral degree is from a non-English-speaking country then you must still submit the TOEFL.
- Student currently enrolled in medical or dental school may submit their MCAT or DAT scores to SOPHAS in lieu of GRE scores.
