17th Annual Public Health Heroes Gala Awards Reception
The UC Berkeley School of Public Health presented the 17th annual Public Health Heroes Award to Dr. J. Michael McGinnis, a top health official who served under four U.S. presidential administrations, and Dr. David Satcher, former U.S. Surgeon General and former CDC director. The awards were given out on March 14 at a gala reception in San Francisco.
Dr. McGinnis received the award in recognition of his transformative influence on public health and prevention. Former U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Donna E. Shalala presented his award in a video presentation.
Dr. Satcher received the award for his leadership in promoting health equity, mental health, and sexual health. Raymond J. Baxter, Kaiser Permanente’s national senior vice president, community benefit, research, and health policy, presented the award.
