Patricia Buffler Honored for Lifetime Achievements Fighting Childhood Leukemia

pat bufflerProfessor and dean emerita Patricia Buffler's long career at UC Berkeley has been distinguished by, among many other accomplishments, her dedication to researching the causes and prevention of childhood leukemia and brain tumors. On June 24, 2009, her body of work will be recognized when she receives the 2009 Children with Leukaemia Science Award for her "lifetime contribution in the field of childhood leukeamia research." Children with Leukaemia is a British charity that funds research into causes and treatments, supports families through welfare programs, and campaign on behalf of children with leukemia and their families.

Buffler holds the Kenneth and Marjorie Kaiser Chair in Cancer Epidemiology at the School. She has received numerous grants from the National Institutes of Health to lead comprehensive and long-term studies on the molecular epidemiology of childhood leukemia and environmental exposures and leukemia, including the Northern California Childhood Leukemia Study.

The Children with Leukaemia reception, "Celebrating Science: current successes, future hopes for childhood cancer," will celebrate the contributions of scientists like Patricia Buffler who have helped to understand the etiology of childhood leukemia over the past 20 years. Three additional award recipients will be honored: for most promising young scientist, for significant contribution to research into the causes and prevention of childhood leukaemia, and for significant contribution to research into improved treatments for childhood leukaemia. The event is hosted by Lord Turnberg and will be held in the House of Lords in London.
