Epidemiology Leader Appointed UC Berkeley Associate Dean for Research

Arthur Reingold, M.D., professor and head of the Epidemiology Division, was named associate dean for research for the UC Berkeley School of Public Health. In this capacity, Reingold will facilitate the work of the School's many research centers, help initiate new translational research initiatives, and help expand the impact of the School's research on improving human health.

“We are extremely fortunate to have a person of Art Reingold's stature provide this important leadership for the School. Few are more respected, and he will serve as a role model for our students and faculty alike," said Dean Stephen Shortell.

Reingold takes over the associate deanship from Associate Professor of Infectious Diseases Eva Harris, who established the School's new Center for Global Public Health during her tenure.

“In my new role, I plan to work with the School's faculty, staff, and students to help enlarge the School's already impressive portfolio of basic and applied research, giving particular emphasis to expanding collaborations within the School, across the Berkeley campus, and with the community and other academic and research organizations here in the Bay area," said Reingold. “These collaborations will undoubtedly yield substantial benefits to all concerned, and I am delighted to be able to help with these efforts."

Reingold's research interests include the interrelationship between tuberculosis and AIDS in developing countries, opportunistic infections in AIDS patients, and emerging and re-emerging infections and vaccine preventable diseases. He conducts epidemiologic research on a variety of infectious diseases in the United States and in developing countries, including Brazil, Uganda, India, and Thailand.

Reingold is a member the Institute of Medicine (IOM) of the National Academy of Science, and serves on the World Health Organization's Scientific Advisory Group of Experts (SAGE), a committee that advises on all key vaccine-related matters.
