6:20 pm - Reception
In the developing world, more than 50,000 people die each day from HIV and TB, malaria, and poor access to basic health care. Lack of political will plays a role in this—but persistent challenges in the lab and the field have slowed improvements in health for the poor.
To achieve significant improvements in global health, the basic toolset for diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of disease must be expanded. In addition, the design and delivery of health systems must be advanced, drawing on partnerships with the public and private sectors. UC Berkeley is poised to address these challenges.
The Berkeley Alliance for Global Health is a new campuswide research initiative focused on improving health in developing countries and throughout the world. It represents an innovative “discovery to delivery” research consortium, comprising two closely linked centers:
The Center for Emerging and Neglected Diseases integrates bioengineering and discovery science with science policy, business, and law, to develop new treatments and vaccines for HIV and TB, malaria, and neglected tropical diseases.
The Center for Global Public Health is based at the School of Public Health and synergizes campus research on many critical global health issues, including maternal mortality, environmental health, information technology and health, and human rights.
Through these centers, Berkeley investigators are conducting cross-disciplinary and paradigm-shifting research in global health. The centers are also building new industry partnerships and international collaborations—to move academic research from the campus to the field, where it has the potential to save millions of lives.
About the Launch
This official launch of the Alliance is an opportunity to unite the community of nonprofit organizations, industry allies, overseas universities, supporters, and other partners who help transform our research into health impact throughout the world.
Getting to the Launch
Due to limited parking availability, we recommend that you use public transit if possible.
The UC Berkeley shuttle lines R, H and C travel frequently between the BART Downtown Berkeley station and Stanley Hall (take the Hearst Mining Circle/Evans Hall stop).
