UC Berkeley and Cambridge University collaborate to launch new Global Health Leadership Forum

The University of California, Berkeley, School of Public Health and Cambridge Executive Education, providing Executive Education at Judge Business School, University of Cambridge, are pleased to announce a collaborative initiative that will combine two highly successful international health leadership programs into an advanced leadership forum named the Global Health Leadership Forum.

For the past five years, Berkeley has offered the Advanced Health Leadership Forum, (cofounded with Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona). The Berkeley program will now complement the 12-year-old Cambridge International Health Leadership Programme. The new Global Health Leadership Forum consists of two week-long summits offering highly interactive programs open to senior health care leaders from the public and private organizations across the world.

The Berkeley program will be held in San Francisco, January 6-12, 2008 (see the Global Health Leadership Forum web site for details), and repeated in January 2009. The Cambridge program is to be held June 8-12, 2008, at Judge Business School, Cambridge, and each June thereafter. Delegates may attend just one program if they wish. Those delegates who attend both programs will be awarded the Berkeley/Cambridge Executive Leadership Certificate.

Faculty from Berkeley, UCSF, and Cambridge are collaborating to support the delivery of the program, with additional input from industry executives, creating a curriculum which emphasizes the practical application of international modern management and leadership techniques for key health care challenges. The Universitat Pompeu Fabra's Center for Research in Economics and Health (CRES) in Barcelona, Spain will continue to participate in sessions as well.

Participants are expected from government, health policy, health systems, medical organizations, health insurance, pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors.

Stephen M. Shortell, dean of the UC Berkeley School of Public Health, commented, "This initiative enables both Schools to build on current successes in training leaders to address the global health challenges facing all countries. Participants will find this to be a unique experience based on interaction with world class faculty working at the forefront of new approaches to improve health and health care in both developed and developing countries. Participants will form a close professional network that will benefit them throughout their careers."

Larry Abeln, chief executive officer, Cambridge Executive Education said, "We are delighted to be involved in the creation of what is a ground-breaking joint international health leadership forum. It will be a very dynamic program. Vigorous debate during the two sessions will address current issues and common challenges being faced by senior leaders from developed and developing countries, such as health sector reform in the face of rapid change and development. This unique exposure to a variety of methods will enable them to learn from each other's experiences and of best practice internationally."

The Global Health Leadership Forum is sponsored by BUPA, McKinsey and Johnson & Johnson. Launching sponsors include the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
