Frequently Asked Questions
Why should I participate in the campaign?
Your gift will be an investment in the future of public health. As a student here, you know the knowledge and training you receive in improving human health, leads to tangible, meaningful results. By supporting the 2011 Class Campaign, you are making it possible for classes that come after us to experience an enhanced public health education.
Isn't the School of Public Health funded by the State of California?
Despite the fact that UC Berkeley is a public university, we receive only 13% of our budget from state funds, a smaller percentage than at any time in the School's history. We rely on the generous support of alumni, friends, and the research grant support of our faculty to make up the difference.
What if I'm unsure what I can afford, since I don't know my job situation?
You can make a pledge to the campaign now, and make the payment later. A pledge reminder will be sent to you at the end of 2011.
How do I make a pledge or gift?
The fastest and easiest way is online: Go to list of funds. Remember to indicate in the "Special Instructions for this Gift" box that your gift is for the "2011 Class Campaign." Or you may return your pledge form to the Student Affairs Office in 417 University Hall or to Eileen Pearl in 417-L University Hall. You may also mail your pledge.
Why is student and alumni giving so important?
The School of Public Health Fund provides monies designated for vital student scholarships, recruitment, and seed dollars for some of the nation's most innovative projects and programs. The percentage of alumni giving is often a factor in the calculation of school rankings and a consideration by corporations and foundations when deciding whether to invest in the School. In addition, prospective students and faculty look to private support as a barometer of alumni satisfaction. It strengthens our ability to recruit top students and faculty. Finally, support to the School helps ensure that the value of your degree from the School of Public Health remains strong.
May I designate my gift?
Yes. When you give to the "School of Public Health Fund," you may direct your gift to where the need is greatest, or to support student scholarships, or for other needs you've identified. In all cases, your contribution will count toward your 2010 Class Campaign.
What is the Policy Advisory Council match?
If 20% of our class pledges, the School's Policy Advisory Council will match our gifts; if 40% pledge, they will double our contributions; if 60% pledge, the Council will triple our dollars. That means every dollar you contribute will have three times the impact!
