The Campaign for Faculty Excellence:
Recruiting and Retaining World Class Faculty

penhoet getting awardThe Berkeley School of Public Health competes nationally and internationally for world-class scholars. University of California faculty are paid, on average, 10 to 15 percent below that of peer institutions even without adjusting for the higher cost of living in the Bay Area. In order to increase our faculty size to meet the increased demand for highly skilled public health professionals and address emerging public health challenges, it's imperative that we attract and retain the most outstanding faculty.

Endowed Chairs
Of the School's current 49 state allowed FTE positions, the School has only nine endowed chairs. Endowed chairs are an important source of funds for faculty research, and for support of masters and doctoral students who work with the faculty on their research. The goal is to add two Distinguished Endowed Chairs at $3 million each, two Endowed Chairs at $2 million each, two Endowed Professorships at $1 million each, and two Faculty Excellence Funds at $500,000 each. To establish and endowed chair, please contact us.

Some areas of priority for endowed chairs include:

  • Maternal and Child Health
  • Nutrition/Healthy Living
  • Health and Health Care Disparities
  • Infectious Diseases/Molecular Epidemiology
  • Prevention and Management of Chronic Illness
  • Environmental Determinants of Health
