Jeffrey S. Oxendine, M.B.A., M.P.H., is associate dean for public health practice and executive director of the Center for Public Health Practice. He is also a lecturer in the SPH Health Policy and Management program and the Haas School of Business Graduate Program in Health Management. In addition, he is the Field Supervisor for Health Policy and Management program.
He has been an executive, educator and consultant in health care for 24 years. Prior to joining UC Berkeley, Jeff held senior administrative positions in leading hospitals and medical groups including Partners Healthcare System, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Bay Imaging Consultants Medical Group and Alta Bates Medical Center.He has taught health policy and management for over 10 years, including five years at Harvard School of Public Health, and is a steering committee member of the Alameda County Coalition on Language Access in Healthcare. He also started and operates his own consulting practice.
He is the founder and president of Health Career Connection, a nonprofit dedicated to assisting undergraduate students to discover and pursue health careers, and to increasing diversity in the health professions.
He obtained his masters degrees in business and public health from UC Berkeley. He has served as president of the Berkeley Health Management Alumni Association and president of Healthcare Executives of Northern California. He is a board member of the Kaiser Permanente National Institute for Culturally Competent Care and also the Community Health Academy in Oakland.
Bernard Griego, M.P.H., is the center's associate director and field supervisor for Health and Social Behavior as well as Environmental Health Sciences. Bernard brings over twenty-five years of experience to the center as a health educator and lecturer for the School of Public Health. As a long time member of the Berkeley community at the University Health Service (Tang Center) Bernard helped establish a body of undergraduate public health classes including an introductory course on health promotion, courses on peer education, racism and violence, health disparities, and leadership. In addition, Bernard has worked extensively in the areas of violence prevention with an emphasis on men as perpetrators, stress management, and multi-cultural/diversity issues for the university community.
Bernard completed his undergraduate education at Berkeley in social welfare and his graduate degree in public health with an emphasis in health education. Bernard has a rich background in mentoring and directing students to the field of public health through his involvement in "pipeline" programs such as the Biology Scholars Program, Upward Bound, and the Professional Development Program. Bernard's current work at the center includes coordination of three professional development seminars, strategic planning, and involvement in many of the center's current projects with community partners.
Jennifer Lachance, Dr.P.H., is a recent Berkeley graduate and as such brings with her a working understanding of our School and the leadership opportunities and challenges currently facing our students. Prior to coming to Berkeley, Jennifer earned her Bachelors and Masters degrees in Mathematical Sciences with a concentration in Public Health from Johns Hopkins University. She then worked as a consultant with Ernst & Young in New York City for 5 years, developing strategic plans and building capacities among healthcare providers, non-profit organizations, and local, state, and federal public health agencies.
Ruthann Haffke, M.S., N.C.C., is the career services manager for the School of Public Health. She has more than 15 years of experience working in career services and helping students achieve their life goals. She has worked with college students in a variety of settings including UC Berkeley, UC Santa Barbara, San Francisco State University, and California College of the Arts. In her role as the career services manager for the School of Public Health, Ruthann develops and implements customized career services for SPH students and alumni including workshops, online job listings, individualized appointments, and industry information. She assists students with resumes, cover letters, interviewing skills, job search strategies, career exploration, and decision making. Before working for the School of Public Health, Ruthann spent nine years providing career counseling at the UC Berkeley Career Center. While employed at UC Berkeley, she has received the Chancellor's Outstanding Staff Award and the Distinguished Service Award. Ruthann is a National Certified Counselor (NCC) and received her master's in career and college counseling from San Francisco State University, and B.A. in sociology from UC Santa Barbara.
K. Jacquelyn Omotalade, J.D., M.P.H. is the Program Manager for the California Pacific Public Health Training Center (CALPACT). She attended both the University of Pittsburgh School of Law and the University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health. She served as a Yale University-William J. Clinton Foundation Fellow to Ethiopia to improve the health care delivery systems within the public hospitals in Ethiopia. She was also a Fulbright Scholar to Indonesia, where she examined the health and political status of Indonesian maids using a technique called photovoice. Jacquelyn has also done numerous research in the area of needle exchange, cultural competency, and the delivery of care. She attended Spelman College for her undergraduate degree. She is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated and the Junior League of San Francisco.
Kelechi Uwaezuoke, MPH is the Manager for the Health Careers Opportunity Program (HCOP) and the undergraduate career/graduate education advisor for the School of Public Health. After receiving her Bachelors from UC Berkeley in Social Welfare and Ethnic Studies, Kelechi went on to conduct research work at San Francisco State and for UC San Francisco’s Department of Family and Community Medicine. She then taught at LaVonya Dejean Middle School in Richmond for three years. Her experience teaching largely low-income and disadvantaged youth re-ignited her desire to pursue public health as a means of bettering the lives of people, one community at a time. Kelechi received her master’s in public health from Drexel University, with a concentration in Community Health and Prevention. Her position as Health Education Program Coordinator for the Solano Coalition for Better Health Disparities Project led her back to the Bay Area in November 2007, where she worked for the last three years developing, implementing, and managing programs aimed towards increasing access to health related resources and reducing health disparities in Solano County. She brings with her a wealth of experience in educating and empowering under-represented and disadvantaged populations to promote community health and wellness.
Guenet Sebsibe, M.D., M.P.H. is the field supervisor for the Infectious Disease and Epidemiology/Biostatistics programs. Prior to attending UC Berkeley, Guenet, got her M.D. degree and practiced clinical medicine in Ethiopia. Her experiences range from studying the prevalence of Schistosoma Mansoni in the highlands of Ethiopia to ophthalmological research in New York City. Since graduating from the M.P.H. program at UC Berkeley in 1994, she's been working with local community-based and international organizations in research and program development activities. She's worked as the health services program specialist for four years with the City of Berkeley Public Health Clinic, developing and managing the anonymous HIV/AIDS/STI testing and counseling sites. She later joined the Center for Health Improvement at Blue Shield of California for five years designing disease management programs and data analysis. In the two years prior to joining CPHP, she worked as the cultural and linguistics services manager and QI analyst with Alameda Alliance for Health. She currently serves on the board of the International Child's Resource Institute, an international organization located in Berkeley, with multiple projects and contacts all over the world.
Candy Pareja is the Administrative Assistant / Events Coordinator for the Center for Public Health Practice. She is a graduate of San Francisco State University, where she received her Bachelor’s degree in Economics. While completing her undergraduate degree, Candy worked for the Human Services & Health Academy at Richmond High School as an Associate Coordinator where she coordinated campus visits, student conferences and college workshops. Prior to joining CPHP, she was a Research Coordinator at the Nicholas C. Petris Center, providing research and administrative support for four years.
Evlyn Andrade earned her BA in Chicano Studies from the University of California, Berkeley. While completing her undergraduate degree, she worked with Teach in Prison and helped inmates at San Quentin Prison attain their GEDs. Prior to joining CPHP, Evlyn worked as an accounting assistant in the Haas School of Business.
