How to Apply

SOPHAS Applications for all on-campus degree programs are available starting on August 18 and the UC Berkeley Graduate Division Applications will be available on September 2, both with a submission deadline of December 1 at 11:59 p.m. (PST). No late applications will be accepted.

Public health degree programs prepare students for a variety of careers as academics, researchers, administrators, policy analysts, regulators, educators, program planners, evaluators, epidemiologists, biostatisticians, environmental health specialists, and biotechnical specialists in government and non-government health agencies and organizations, as well as educational settings.

We offer three academic degrees, two professional degrees in eight concentrations and three programmatic configurations, five concurrent degrees with other campus departments, and an online interdisciplinary MPH degree program. Depending on the degree program you are applying to, there is a specific set of instructions on how to apply. Please be sure to follow the application procedures for the specific program you are applying to! You will find detailed admissions instructions for all programs below.

For questions about application fee waivers, please refer to the SOPHAS and UC Berkeley Graduate Division websites. We do not administer fee waiver requests in our office.

If you are a previous/current UC Berkeley graduate student, please skip down to the “Previous/Current UC Berkeley Graduate Student Applicants” section in the tab below for specific instructions on how to apply.

All applicants to our on-campus graduate degree programs must first choose the degree program and area of concentration to which they will apply; please research these in detail before beginning the application process.  Applicants may only apply to one program and should tailor their applications to the program of choice (please note: some programs will have additional requirements so please be sure to go through the “qualifications” section in the program-specific pages).

For all on-campus degree programs:

1. You are required to submit both a SOPHAS and UC Berkeley Graduate Division Application:

a. We require both applications to be submitted by the December 1 deadline and paid in full (or a waiver in process) in order for your application to be considered for review.

b. There is a fee for both applications (SOPHAS- $120 for the initial application; UC Berkeley- $90 domestic and $110 international)

c. Deadline is December 1 at 11:59 pm PST for both applications. If we receive one application but not the other, your application will not be considered for review.

d. Due to the processing time at SOPHAS we strongly recommend submitting your application to SOPHAS by early November.  Late applications will not be considered under any circumstances. We recommend starting early and submitting by early November to compensate for the processing time at SOPHAS and avoid any potential technical difficulties that may arise.  But with this in mind, please note that there are no penalties for submitting your application to SOPHAS on December 1.

2. For the SOPHAS application:

a. Select only one degree program and area of concentration; you will only be able to apply to one.

b. Be sure to fill out the entire application and be as thorough as possible.  Make sure you arrange to have all general School of Public Health admissions requirements (e.g. test scores, letters of recommendations, transcripts, etc.) submitted along with any additional qualifications requested by the program you are applying to.

3. For the UC Berkeley Graduate Division Application:

a. Please select the correct degree program that corresponds to the area of concentration you are applying to as listed here. UCB Grad Div Admissions Programs PDF

b. Only fill out the required sections that are marked with an asterisk (*) in the application.

i. You are NOT required to submit letters of recommendations to this application; have your letter writers e-submit to SOPHAS only.

ii. You are NOT required to submit your GRE scores through this application; you are only required to send your scores to SOPHAS code 4227.

iii. You ARE required to submit your TOEFL scores to this application to UC Berkeley code 4833 (only applicable to international applications).

Due to the volume of applications we receive we cannot confirm receipt of individual applications or application materials. Both the SOPHAS and UC Berkeley application have a status page that you can access by logging back into your application. SOPHAS will use this as a mechanism to communicate to you that there may be something amiss with your application. The completeness and timeliness of your application is your responsibility so check back often and be sure to leave yourself enough time turn in the application by the deadline.
