Fees and Financial Aid

Fees
Fees are determined by the University of California's Graduate Division Office and are subject to change.  All fees are automatically billed to student accounts by the Campus Accounts Receivables System (CARS) and will be reflect on students' monthly e-Bills.

For the complete schedule of fees, see the Graduate Division web site. Questions regarding California residency should be directed to:

Office of the Registrar
University of California, Berkeley
39 Sproul Hall #5404
Berkeley, CA 94720-5404.

Professional Degree Fee
Students admitted to the School of Public Health MPH and DrPH. programs for Fall 2008 are assessed a Professional Degree Fee (PDF) in each academic year. The PDF for 2008-09 is $4,583.60, and is likely to increase slightly in subsequent years.

Including the Professional Degree Fee, the current estimated cost is $14,809.10 for California residents, and $29,963.10 for out-of-state and international students.

Graduate Fellowships and Scholarships
Each academic year a limited number of graduate fellowships and scholarships are awarded by the Graduate Division and the School of Public Health. These awards are granted in honor of distinguished scholarship; nominees must have a minimum grade-point average of 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale). Please apply for these fellowships or scholarships only if you meet this criterion.

Continuing graduate students should obtain all necessary forms from the Student Services and Admissions Office, 417 University Hall, and submit the completed applications to the School of Public Health.

Office of Financial Aid
The Office of Financial Aid is responsible for a variety of financial assistance programs, including loans, grants, and work-study awards. These programs are based on demonstrated financial need and require the submission of a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is available at all schools and colleges and online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov.  At UC Berkeley, FAFSA forms are available on the 2nd floor of Sproul hall.  For more information, please visit the financial aid website at http://www.grad.berkeley.edu/financial.

Graduate Opportunity Program
The Graduate Opportunity Program awards need-based fellowships to provide financial support to a community of scholars that will enhance the level of diversity at UC Berkeley. Economically disadvantaged students who have overcome various life challenges such as educational, physical, or social disadvantages or whose experience brings a perspective or background not widely represented within the school are invited to apply for a GOP award. All GOP applicants must be entering students and U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

Federal Traineeships
A limited amount of federal traineeship funding may be available for qualified U.S. citizens or permanent residents studying in health professions shortage areas during the 2008-09 academic year. Professional degree (MPH. and DrPH) applicants as well as continuing students in the areas of biostatistics, environmental health sciences, epidemiology, nutrition, maternal and child health, and toxicology are eligible to apply for federal traineeships.

Student Financial Aid Policy
Students may not receive financial support from two federal sources simultaneously.  For example, a student may not receive a federal traineeship and also be employed and receive funding from a federal training or research grant.  Also, students may not receive simultaneous financial support from more than one source within the University (e.g. federal and state funds) without approval of the dean of the School of Public Health and the dean of the Graduate Division or their designated deputies.

International Students
Although funding is limited for international students (students who are neither U.S. citizens nor permanent residents), financial assistance is available to help offset the cost of education through a variety of sources. The Berkeley International House website has information about grants, scholarships, fellowships and loans available to international students. International students are also eligible for work study and GSI/GSR positions. To learn more about student employment opportunities, as well as additional financial aid opportunities, please visit the Graduate Division website. Students in need of financial support may also contact international sponsoring organizations and Ministries of Health regarding possible fellowship or scholarship aid. Please note that international applicants are required to provide evidence of sufficient financial support prior to enrollment.
